What is a videoscope?

A borescope is an optical inspection instrument that lets you see into confined or enclosed spaces without disassembly. A videoscope (video borescope) has a micro-camera at the tip of a flexible insertion probe and shows a real-time image on a screen – with the ability to capture photo and video for documentation.

Modern videoscopes have an articulating probe tip, powerful LED lighting and a high-resolution screen, so the operator can navigate around corners and inspect detail with precision. That makes them the standard tool for remote visual inspection (RVI) in industry, where disassembly is expensive, time-consuming or simply not possible without stopping production.

How to choose the right borescope

The right model depends on the task. The key criteria:

• Probe diameter: A thin probe (from 1.2 mm) reaches into tight channels; a thicker probe allows better optics and lighting.
• Probe length: From short probes for engines to long ones (up to 15 m) for pipes and ducts.
• Articulation: 4-way steering gives full control around corners; simpler models have 2-way or a fixed tip.
• Screen and resolution: From 5" HD to 8" Full HD – a larger, sharper screen makes it easier to assess small defects.
• Lighting: LED is standard; some models also offer IR/UV for special tasks.
• Measurement: Stereo/3D measurement lets you measure cracks and defects directly in the image.

Applications

Turbines and engines

Inspection of turbine blades, combustion chambers and cylinders without disassembly. Detect wear, cracks and foreign objects where teardown is costly or impossible. For aero and gas turbines, borescope inspection is a fixed part of the maintenance programme.

Welds and castings

Quality control of welds, and checking for porosity and internal defects in cast parts. With a videoscope you can document the internal condition and catch faults that are not visible from the outside.

Pipes, tanks and HVAC

Internal inspection of pipework, vessels, heat exchangers and ventilation ducts for corrosion, deposits and blockages. Long probes make it possible to reach far in without opening the system.

Aviation and power generation

Borescope inspection is part of scheduled maintenance of aero and gas turbines and other critical equipment, where documented visual control is a requirement. Precise articulation and good lighting are decisive for assessing components that are hard to reach.

Borescope, videoscope or fibrescope?

The terms are used interchangeably, but there are differences. A fibrescope transmits the image optically through fibre optics to an eyepiece – inexpensive, but lower image quality. A videoscope (video borescope) uses a digital camera at the tip and shows the image on a screen, with far better resolution, documentation and measurement options. The NDTec series are videoscopes, and give you both a real-time image and stored documentation in the same operation.

Documentation and reporting

A large part of the value in a borescope inspection lies in the documentation. With a videoscope the operator can capture still images and video along the way, mark findings and collect them in an inspection report. That gives traceable documentation of the condition – useful for internal maintenance, for quality assurance in production, and towards customers or authorities where visual control is a requirement. With repeated inspections it becomes easy to follow the development of a specific point over time, so you can plan action before a fault becomes critical.
